Project Overview for Maidstone TMF
The Maidstone TMF is a critical component of Victoria’s $1.85 billion Next Generation Trams initiative. Built to house and maintain the new G Class trams, the facility is one of Melbourne’s most significant public transport infrastructure developments.
In late 2022, TruFlow was approached by the TMF project team to develop a custom-built spray booth capable of servicing Melbourne’s largest articulated trams within tight space constraints and a uniquely challenging environment.
Challenges & Design Innovation in Installing a Custom Tram Paint Booth
Due to limited floor space and the facility’s saw-tooth roof structure, a standard automotive spray booth solution wasn’t going to suffice. The booth required a custom roof-mounted plant system to work within the available space, while still offering full functionality for servicing large trams.
Over an 18-month collaboration involving four major design revisions, TruFlow engineered a solution that met both performance and spatial requirements.
The result: a 7.2m wide, 6.3m high and 45m long large-scale spray booth with semi-downdraft airflow and integrated heating. The booth was designed to meet all technical, spatial and functional requirements of the TMF.
On-Site Delivery
As with any large-scale infrastructure project, there were anticipated hurdles, including complex site conditions and union coordination. TruFlow worked closely with the build teams and stakeholders throughout the installation phase to navigate these challenges.
In early 2025, the booth was energised and tested for the first time, exceeding all performance expectations. It is now fully capable of servicing any tram currently in Melbourne’s fleet.
Outcome & Ongoing Support for a Custom Tram Paint Booth
The booth is scheduled to be officially handed over to Metro Trains and site operator Alstom within weeks. TruFlow will continue to provide long-term support and maintenance, ensuring this custom spray booth performs at its peak for years to come.
